What’s In An Old Year?

breatheI wonder how many people view New Year’s Eve Day as a day of reflection. As I look out onto my yard and the beautiful glistening snow I am reminded of the seasons that have passed this year.

For me it has been a year of successes, failures, fun times with family and sad mourning times with family and friends. It has been a year of life because as much as we would like to dream the New Year is going to be free of any anguish it isn’t going to happen, because life is filled with hills and valleys every single year. Some years may be better than others but those years, and hills and valleys make us who we are.

There are always moments in life we know we can do better. There are moments in life we hold on to so tight it keeps us from moving forward in our lives. The trick is to recognize the moments we need to leave behind and the moments we need to carry with us into the future.

Looking back on my life there are many times I have failed as a mother, as a wife, as a financial planner of my finances, in my writing and as a friend. When I feel the despair of depression, those are the moments I cling to and they keep me in the past. They keep me from moving forward. They keep me from accepting who God has created me to be and I stagnate.

I don’t believe we were meant to live our lives feeling like a failure, but the outside voices beat us down and we hear the negative rather than the positive. We don’t see our successes or the positive moments and people who help shape our lives.

This may seem like a strange New Year’s column but I write from the heart. Today is a day of reflection for me, looking back, seeing what I want to change, what I want to hold on to, and what I need to do to go forward to be the best me I can be. And  that is what I wish for you, my readers.

This isn’t a resolution but a way to began the new year. I love to write. I love dreaming of weird impractical characters and I will keep doing it. I must admit this year I have felt the respect slip from being a computer technician to beciming a writer and especially a writer of silly tales. I feel the respect of my readers and those that love Cozy Mysteries and the impractical, but I felt the ridicule of those that do not understand spinning a tale of silliness in the real world. This coming year I choose to spin more silly tales and let the voices of those who believe I am nothing but a fluff bucket, and my opinions do not matter because of it, go and not stop me from doing what I love.

I choose to speak out against disrespect in all areas, on the Internet, on my Social Media and in real life but I also choose to answer the disrespect with respect.

Having a creative soul leads me to explore many creative avenues and this year I choose to explore them and not let those that think I should stick to one thing stop me. My soul has to soar. I can’t be burdened with structure and lines and people that box me in.

And I vow to get out of debt. Yes, writers can have debt. I don’t know how, but I will have faith in myself to believe I can do it.

I am grateful for my life this year. I am grateful for my family and friends and for my readers. I am grateful for life, and light and hope. I am grateful for my failures, my successes, my moments of holding on and my moments of letting go. God created each of us different and I will listen to the voice inside of me telling me how to use my creative talents. I hope all of you will do the same. Our lives are complicated. They are a mixture of feelings that make us, us. My hope for me and you is to accept yourself as you are, celebrate your uniqueness, let go of those moments you need to so you can go into 2016, growing, caring, loving and yes failing, for it is in failure we find out who we are and what strengths we have to carry us into our future.

Happy New Year. Celebrate you.

Granny’s Favorite Things! Countdown To Christmas -Gordon Lynch and His Wall of Art!

I and my character Hermiony Vidalia Criony Fiddlestadt (Granny) fall in love with certain artists, companies, places and their products. On my website, Julie Seedorf, I will be adding a page featuring my Favorite Things. I know I am not Oprah and I am sorry I can’t afford to give away some of My Favorite Things. What I can do is share them with you so they can become your Favorite Things and you can enjoy them too. During the end of November and the month of December I will be sharing art, books, artists and other items I have on my list of Favorite things.  Join me in my journey. I will add to the pages on my Blog and website the favorite things I highlight here.
I am starting my journey of sharing with someone I met this summer in Osakis, Minnesota, his name is Gordon Lynch. I can’t resist antique stores and as I wander through them looking to find whatever my eye catches. On the day I snooped in Antiques Osakis what caught my eye was artwork by Gordon. Not only can he draw but uses old records to create stunning pictures of celebrities that complement his drawing. My impression of his is that he is a very humble man. He graciously granted me an interview. Make sure you stop at the slide show and look at a few pictures I took that impressed me.

Who is Gordon Lynch?
Born Osakis, grew up on small farm near Eagle Bend. Went to Alex Tech for advertising art, worked in Jamestown, ND and Sleepy Eye, MN in advertising. Married Rosemary in 1983 and moved back to Osakis. Built our home while working for Fingerhut and when they closed I went back to college for my Bachelor of Fine Art in painting at St. Cloud State University. Also have degrees in microcomputer and general business. Ran a couple of businesses and wound up as a HR manager for about 12 years until I decided to semi-retire and pursue other interests. We have three grown children. Katie teaches spanish at Strive Academy in St. Cloud; Erin has a post-doctorate position at UC Davis in California; and Zachary is majoring in business at St. Cloud State University.
How did you end up in an Antique Store in Osakis?
Well, my wife started as a dealer there several years ago and after I came up with this technique I’m using I thought I’d display a few paintings there. As a lot of people showed interest in them and they sold I started painting more. That was about 3 seasons ago.
When did you start painting and drawing?
I started drawing early, as a child probably 4 or 5. In those days we didn’t have a lot of toys, but I could draw things like rockets or cars etc. and I drew all through school. In high school we had a visiting artist during my junior and senior year that helped me become interested in art in general and that’s when I first painted with oil paints.
What gave you your idea to create art out of old records?
I really don’t know exactly. But, at least for me, when I’m seriously interested in something it’s always in the back of my mind. That’s when the ideas come along – this one worked – most don’t.
What are the missteps you made along the way to hone your talent?
Too many to mention, I’ve tried a lot of things.
How do you decide your subjects?
I listen to a lot of music and normally paint musicians that I like. I have done a few commisions and will do more, but this is a hobby and a pastime for me so I don’t want to turn it into a job.
What other type of art do you create?
Nothing at the moment.
Where can we find your artwork?
I will be showing them at Antiques Osakis again next season, starting in May. I may possibly show some this winter at Bumbledee’s Antiques and Art in St. Cloud, MN.
Anything else you would like to add to this interview?
Thank you, I appreciate your interest in my artwork.
I would like to thank Gordon for granting me this interview. It was a blessing to meet someone with this gift.

Oatmeal, Olive Oil and Honey, Scrub A Dub Dub!

Be Good To YourselfI will admit, I am lazy today. I spent the weekend writing  chapters for my new book, The Penderghast Puzzle Protectors, which is a new series I am working on to add to my Fuchsia Minnesota Series. I took the time to have fun with friends, do a little social media, pray and eat, eat and eat some more. As a result I woke up  this morning feeling as if I was hit by a ten ton truck. On top of it all it is raining. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful it is raining and not snowing. I have loved the weathers continuing  warmth in what is usually a cold climate in November,  but the cloudy rainy day makes me want to go back to bed when I am moving slowly.

When tired I think of strange things and today I was contemplating skin, namely the wrinkly skin on my face. I have never had good skin. In my pre-teen and teenage years and as a young adult I had acne, very bad acne. In those days they didn’t know what to do with it and gave us all kind of bogus information at the time, thought to be good information, but now would be very bad information which is probably why my acne never improved until I was in my 40’s. As a young adult I visited dermatologists and had skin scrubs, but the scars still persist and now I have to add the wrinkles.

I must say I don’t dwell on this too much because it is what it is and it has never bothered my social life when I was in school or as an adult. The only time I remember it bothering me when I was younger, ninth grade younger, and you remember what they say about remembering unkind words and not all the kind words you hear, well I remember one person’s words that stuck with me. His name was Bill and he was a year older in my school. He told me one time I was so ugly he didn’t know why I existed. I remember this because it has probably been the cruelest words I heard in all of my high school years directed at me. However, it didn’t make me hide my head in shame, it made me realize the guy was a jerk. And looking back I should have told him that. My pitted face and now my wrinkles are a part of who I am.

But on this lazy morning I decided to pamper myself. On Pinterest I have all these spa recipes saved and instead of going straight to work I decided to treat myself to a facial. I pulled up my Pinterest and my Spa Recipes and the first article I had saved was one from Woman’s Day titled Do It Yourself Home Face Masks. I decided to try the one that said exfoliate. It consisted of honey, olive oil and oatmeal. Instead of combining the olive oil, and honey, separately from the oatmeal while it cooked for a few minutes, I added them together at once and put them in the microwave for 30 seconds. I slathered the warm concoction on my face and it was heavenly. I left it sit for a few minutes while I read something inspirational and then I rinsed it off with warm water.

Were my wrinkles better, were my acne scars smaller — probably not, but my skin felt as if I had visited an upscale spa and got a treatment. I finished it off with something I do every morning and that is  rubbing on my face a mixture of Frankincense Oil and grapeseed oil as a moisturizer for my skin.

We all need days to chill out and be good to ourselves. As a writer I tend to get caught up in my projects, forget to eat, forget to take the time to relax and I forget to take care of myself with good eating and daily exercise. As a result when I remember food I eat things that overload my system and make me feel sluggish. I get so used to being on a fast schedule I forget that pampering yourself is good for your health. When I feel sluggish outreach to other people is very sluggish too.

I have so many things pinned on Pinterest. I save them to use in the future and I might never look at them again. As far as my saved facials are concerned, it felt so good this morning to be slathery that I am going to continue experimenting with the ones I have saved. I’ll let you know when I find the one I love the best.

Be good to yourself today. If you take care of you, you will be able to take care of others.
